It starts very slowly as you learn how to live in this inhospitable environment. At the beginning it is a grind, to be sure. If you want to conquer this game it will take a lot of time to find optimal paths to the places you want to go. Others may disagree, however this type of game rewards those that can deal with a ton of failure when first starting out. Isn't that the point of a survival game? I think it is balanced well.
